Drawing Labubu starts with balancing the large head against the long, upright ears. Beginners often make the ears too short or the body too stiff. This lesson uses construction shapes to capture the character's mischievous posture and furry appearance.

About Labubu

Labubu is a character created by artist Kasing Lung, known for having nine pointed teeth and long, rabbit-like ears. The character has a pear-shaped body and large, expressive eyes.

What you need

  • 2B graphite pencil
  • 4B or 6B graphite pencil for the darkest shadows
  • Blue col-erase pencil for the construction lines
  • Kneaded eraser
  • Cream or white drawing paper

The 9 steps

Light comes from the upper left in every step. Each picture shows the drawing as it should look when that step is done.

Step 1: Head and body construction

Step 1: Head and body construction

Use the blue col-erase pencil to draw a large head oval and a smaller body oval underneath.

Common mistake: Making the head too small will change the character's proportions; ensure the head is larger than the body.

Step 2: Ears and limb placement

Step 2: Ears and limb placement

Add two long ovals for the ears and basic lines for the limbs with the blue col-erase pencil.

Common mistake: Beginners often draw the ears too short, but they should be nearly as long as the head itself.

Step 3: Furry torso outline

Step 3: Furry torso outline

Switch to the 2B pencil and draw a jagged, furry outline following the blue construction shapes.

Common mistake: Avoid drawing smooth, solid lines; use short, uneven strokes to suggest thick fur.

Step 4: Ear and limb outline

Step 4: Ear and limb outline

Use the 2B pencil to outline the ears and add small paws to the arms and legs.

Common mistake: Do not make the limbs too thick; they should remain relatively thin compared to the bulky body.

Step 5: Facial features

Step 5: Facial features

Draw the large eye circles and a wide mouth with nine pointed teeth using the 2B pencil.

Common mistake: Miscounting the teeth is common; ensure there are exactly nine pointed teeth to stay true to the character.

Step 6: Pupils and texture

Step 6: Pupils and texture

Add pupils to the eyes and light fur texture lines inside the body with the 2B pencil.

Common mistake: Placing the pupils too far apart can make the character look unfocused; keep them centered in the eyes.

Step 7: Shadow block-in

Step 7: Shadow block-in

Switch to the 4B pencil and block in the shadow on the right side of the character.

Common mistake: Pressing too hard at this stage makes it difficult to blend; use a light, even pressure for the first layer of shadow.

Step 8: Darkest darks

Step 8: Darkest darks

Use the 6B pencil for the darkest parts of the eyes and mouth, then add a cast shadow.

Common mistake: Forgetting the cast shadow makes the character look like it is floating rather than standing on the ground.

Step 9: Highlights and cleanup

Step 9: Highlights and cleanup

Lift highlights on the eyes and the top of the head using the kneaded eraser.

Common mistake: Lifting too much graphite can make the drawing look messy; use the pointed tip of the eraser for precision.

What makes it look right

  • Use short, flicking motions with the 2B pencil to create the appearance of fur along the edges.
  • Keep the blue construction lines light so they do not show through the final shading.
  • Leave the teeth pure white to make them stand out against the darker mouth.
